Do you recycle, use cloth bags instead of the plastic? People that believe they care about the environment do so when it’s convenient, not as a habit. Sen. Gaylord Nelson did not have that in mind when he created Earth Day.
His goal was “a nationwide demonstration of concern for the environment so large that it would shake the political establishment out of its lethargy”. About 20 million Americans participated in the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. His example that others in government could follow: a public servant who did not hesitate, even if it was not politically popular for the times, to do what he thought best for the country and the future of its people.
We also want people to care about the environment, those in public service, individuals to take action and create change, to care most of all. We are also speaking on environmental issues. We found that the people cared, the people were aware of the limits, that one day the water supply would be endangered and how important it is to each keeping our environment clean for future generations. Nelson said later that the Earth Day was a big gamble. -
“If we could tap into the environmental concerns of the general public and infuse the student anti-war energy into the environmental cause, we could generate a demonstration that would force this issue onto the political agenda.”
Earth Day worked, he said later, because the people wanted it to work. “We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated,” Nelson said. “That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day: It organized itself.”
“Earth Day is now part of the – economic and political mainstream ~ Steve Cohen”. We should be proud.
